Packers' Tyler Lancaster Will Be Fun to Watch

We haven't really talked about the Packers’ newest crop undrafted free agents a whole lot so far, but my early favorite from the group is Tyler Lancaster, the monster defensive tackle out of Northwestern.

With a name like Lancaster he sounds like he was built in Amish country. Just looking at him, he kind of seems like he was the result of a barn raising. He’s 6-3 and change and 315 pounds with 10 ⅝ inch hands, which you could easily confuse for bear paws. Then there’s his wingspan: a tremendous 80 inches, about five inches more than his height.

He ran a sub-five second 40-yard dash and was great at his pro day, which also featured my favorite thing about Lancaster: a ridiculous 36 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press.

I don't know what the Packers are necessarily looking for along the defensive line out of this year’s rookies because we’re in a bit of a transition period as far as what we know about the defense. How will Mike Pettine use his defensive fronts? How will linemen be deployed in sub packages? We just don’t have that information yet.

What I do know is this: it’s always good to have a lot of big, athletic bodies available on the defensive line. At the very least, Lancaster is that. It will be fun to watch him in training camp this year.
