Why Darrelle Revis to the Packers Might Not Be Crazy

He’s almost 32-years old. He’s declined in production every year for most of the last half-decade. He’s only had more than two interceptions in a season once since 2012. But it’s not crazy for the Packers to think about bringing Darrelle Revis in for a visit.

There’s one big reason why: money.

Explaining Revis' complex contract situation

A great corner for more than a decade, Revis now finds himself without a job, released by the Jets after rejoining the team in 2015. Their reasoning is clear: Revis is not what he once was. Take (for what they’re worth) his grades from Pro Football Focus; Revis has been a declining player every year since 2011.

But the fact that he was released puts into play one interesting feature of Revis’ most recent contract with the Jets: offset language.

In short, offset language means that teams who still owe a player money can have some of their cost offset by the value of the contract a player signs with a new team.

In this case, Revis is owed $6 million dollars by the Jets. If he signs somewhere for more than $6 million this year, the Jets will owe him nothing. But if he signs for less, as the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport points out, things get interesting:

Is Darrelle Revis a good fit for the Packers?

This is why Revis could make sense for the Packers. Though he’s certainly not what he once was, he’d still likely have been the best corner on the Packers’ roster last season, and would likely be even this year.

Though the jury is still out on Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins, it’s safe to say that they’re still likely going to need some help next year. The less exposure they get in the secondary, the better, and whatever Davon House contributes next year, it’s likely not going to be enough to shield the two third year corners from attention.

Revis, if he’s able to perform like anything approaching a competent starter, probably could. If he’s willing to play for something close to the veteran’s minimum, he’d be a steal.

Could Darrelle Revis to the Packers happen?

This move hinges on two big points.

First, Revis has to be comfortable playing for a contract worth at or near the league minimum. According to Spotrac.com, the veteran minimum for a player with 10 or more years of experience is $1 million. That’s certainly doable, but again, Revis has to be agreeable to it.

Second, the Packers need to believe that Revis can still play. As recently as 2015, they did. Reportedly, the Packers were one of the last two or three teams in the running to land Revis the last time he was an unrestricted free agent.

"It was the Packers, Baltimore as well, Cleveland, the Chiefs and the Jets also," said Revis at the time.

How much they offered (if anything) is unknown, but we do know they at least took a look. That’s probably because Revis has (or had) skills that align well with what the Packers like their corners to do.

Revis has always been known as a great man-to-man defender, and the Packers love to play press man coverage. It’s why they re-signed Davon House. It’s why Ladarius Gunter kept getting opportunities last year. And if they still believe he can play, it could be a reason they’d consider Darrelle Revis again.

If the money is right, this could be a move worth pursuing.
