642 - Packers Can't Ignore the Offensive Line

See this content in the original post

It’s never a bad idea to take an offensive lineman. It’s one of the most body-heavy positions on a football team’s roster. And if the Packers want to go that direction in this year’s draft, there are a lot of interesting options, especially in the interior.

How do you find a good offensive lineman? (4:52)

The Packers have pretty well-established thresholds they use for identifying offensive line prospects. They don’t always stick to this list, but generally they’re looking for linemen who hit all three of these thresholds:

  • A 10-yard split in the 40-yard dash of 1.8 seconds or less

  • A short shuttle time of 4.75 seconds or less

  • A 3-cone time of 7.7 seconds or less

Offensive line prospects who hit the Packers’ thresholds (8:52)

This year’s draft offers quite a few guys who hit those thresholds, especially among interior linemen. Sorted by their ranking on the NFL Mock Draft Database’s Consensus Big Board, here are the players among the top 200 prospects who hit everything the Packers look for:

  • Cody Mauch - North Dakota State (54)

  • Luke Wypler - Ohio State (72)

  • Blake Freeland - BYU (90)

  • Chandler Zavala - NC State (123)

  • Olusegun Oluwatimi - Michigan (145)

  • Ricky Stromberg - Arkansas (162)

  • Ryan Hayes - Michigan (167)

  • Jon Gaines - UCLA (186)

Other noteworthy players (24:41)

There are a few other players who didn’t complete (or chose not to do) all the testing drills, but came close enough that they should at least be in the conversation. Among those, two really stand out:

  • Peter Skoronski - Northwestern (10)

  • Darnell Wright - Tennessee (25)
