Introducing the Random Packers Player Podcast
There’s a new podcast in town.
Today we’re pleased to announce the debut of the Random Packers Player Podcast, a show entirely about the players who have played football in Green Bay.
Only about 2,000 players have appeared in a game for the Green Bay Packers. That’s barely big enough to qualify as a small town in Wisconsin, but it’s just big enough to be an ambitious project. That’s why we figured we’d get started on telling all of their stories right now.
Starting with the three episodes releasing today, we’re going to dive into the history of as many Packers players as we can. Going forward, we’ll release a new episode every Wednesday.
The stories won’t be comprehensive — you can only tell so much of what a player has done in about five minutes — but they should give you a little glimpse into the careers of the men who have made the Packers great.
Here’s a quick look at our first three.
Tunch Ilkin
Ilkin only lined up for one game in Green Bay, but you’ve definitely seen at least one play from that game. If you were going to be a part of just one game, this wouldn’t be a bad one to pick.
Ray DiPierro
A fun-loving character from the early 1950s, DiPierro made the most of his short stint with the Packers and left town with a new nickname and a lot of stories.
Robert Ferguson
Once the highest-drafted wide receiver since Sterling Sharpe, Ferguson’s career in Green Bay started slow, but peaked when he ended up catching one of the ultimate “trivia question” passes in Packers history.
And that’s just the first three. There are plenty more great stories to come.
How will we pick which Packers to cover? Through the use of Pro Football Reference, we’ve generated a list of every Packers player to appear in at least one regular season or playoff game with the Packers, assigning each player a number. Then, using a random number generator, we’ll pick 10 players at a time. Once we write and record those 10 episodes, we’ll move on to the next 10. Then the next 10. Then the next 10.
How many players will we cover? It’s hard to say. If we did one podcast a week, it’d take us almost 40 years to get to all the players in Packers history. That seems like an unlikely outcome. But even if we don’t get to 2,000, it’ll be fun to dive into Packers history and see what we can learn.
So join us on this journey. The Random Packers Player Podcast is now live. Find it wherever you like to list.
