Let's fix the Panthers, part 3 — Where did it all go wrong?
Fixing the Carolina Panthers is proving harder than I thought.
Parts one and two were easy, because we were looking at two simple, discrete decisions: hiring the general manager and hiring the head coach. There are a bunch of moving parts to both of those hires, but compared to overhauling a roster, they’re about as easy as they could be.
Sorting through the mess that is the Panthers roster is exponentially more complex and difficult, and the worst part is how much general manager Dan Morgan has been hamstrung by the decisions of his predecessor. We have very little wiggle room because of a bunch of moves now-departed general manager Scott Fitterer made — and a couple that he didn’t make.
As a result, I’m going to extend this section into two parts. First, let’s look at how the Panthers got into the current mess they’re in, then we’ll look at what Morgan has done to dig out of it and anything he could have done differently.
