Let's fix the Panthers part 4 — Can we stockpile some assets?

As we laid out in the previous edition of “Fixing the Panthers,” general manager Dan Morgan is up a creek and it’s not really his fault. Most of the Panthers’ problems are years in the making, and most of those problems will also be years in the fixing, too.

To wit: the Panthers are on the hook for about $46 million in dead cap charges for this season. Even if they’d wanted to spend big in free agency to fill out their roster, they couldn’t have. And things don’t get much better next season. Heading into the 2025 NFL year, the Panthers will only have about $16 million in cap space — 19th most in the NFL.

How’s a guy to fix that sort of mess? I think it’s a three-step process, and unfortunately, none of those steps is really going to be easy in the environment we’ve got to work with. Let’s take a look at those steps and see how Morgan is doing so far.

Here are the steps as I see them:

  • Get your financial house in order to maximize the opportunity for future spending

  • Do whatever you can to stockpile draft assets to build a young, cost-controlled core of players

  • Buy yourself time by building around what you do have

How did Morgan do this offseason?
