Packers 53 Man Roster Prediction: Start of Training Camp
Here's my crack at a 53-man roster prediction for the Packers. Check out Gary's here.
Quarterbacks (3): Aaron Rodgers, Brett Hundley, Joe Callahan
I know, I’m as surprised as you are. I believe the Packers will start the season with three quarterbacks. The numbers work and Mike McCarthy is a big believer in Joe Callahan.
Running backs and fullbacks (4): Ty Montgomery, Aaron Ripkowski, Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones
Notable cut: Devante Mays
Mays likely ends up on the practice squad. Other than that, this should be a pretty easy position group to predict.
Wide receivers (7): Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, DeAngelo Yancey, Trevor Davis, Malachi Dupre, Jeff Janis, Geronimo Allison (suspended)
Eight receivers, technically, since Geronimo Allison will end up on the roster after serving his suspension. Who gets cut then?
Tight ends (3): Martellus Bennett, Lance Kendricks, Richard Rodgers
Gone are the days of four or even five tight ends. The Packers will stick with their three plus-sized pass catchers.
Offensive line (8): David Bakhtiari, Lane Taylor, Corey Linsley, Jahri Evans, Bryan Bulaga, Jason Spriggs, Don Barclay, Geoff Gray
Notable cuts: Kofi Amichia, Kyle Murphy, Lucas Patrick
Amichia likely needs at least one year of seasoning before making a serious roster push, and I like Gray’s experience and athleticism at guard over Murphy’s size.
Defensive line (5): Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark, Ricky Jean Francois, Dean Lowry, Montravius Adams, Letroy Guion (suspended)
Notable cuts: Christian Ringo, Brian Price
Ringo is probably done, and Price could end up on the practice squad again. The biggest question here is what happens after Letroy Guion returns from his suspension. The Packers haven’t cut him already, so unless someone else really blows up in training camp, it’s easy to see Guion coming back again.
Outside linebackers (6): Nick Perry, Clay Matthews, Jayrone Elliott, Kyler Fackrell, Vince Biegel, Johnathan Calvin
In this projection, Johnathan Calvin is the only undrafted free agent making the roster. His versatility and size could make him a contender.
Inside linebackers (3): Jake Ryan, Blake Martinez, Joe Thomas
A position in transition, inside linebackers don’t see a major departure from last year in terms of roster construction. How much they play, though, is a different question.
Cornerbacks (6): Damarious Randall, Davon House, Kevin King, LaDarius Gunter, Quinten Rollins, Lenzy Pipkins
Notable cut: Josh Hawkins, Demetri Goodson
Goodson has never been much more than a special teams player, while Josh Hawkins is a victim of roster churn. The bottom three corners could be very vulnerable. This will be a heated battle in training camp.
Safeties (5): Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Morgan Burnett, Kentrell Brice, Josh Jones, Marwin Evans
Size, athleticism, and versatility abound in this position group that stays largely unchanged from last year. All five players on this list could see significant
Specialists (3): Mason Crosby, Justin Vogel, Derek Hart
Unless Mason Crosby gets hit by a bus, he’s going to be the Packers’ kicker. Vogel and Hart have an uncontested paths to the roster right now, key words being right now. That could change at any time.
