Packers Select WR DeAngelo Yancey in Fifth Round

We’ve described wide receiver as a “sneaky need” for the Packers, and Ted Thompson and company have addressed that need with DeAngelo Yancey of Purdue University in the fifth round.

Yancey is a big wide receiver (6-2, 220) with somewhat suspect speed, but his great vertical leap numbers put him well within the physical parameters that the Packers love from their receivers.

What are DeAngelo Yancey’s strengths?

  • Big wide receiver (6-2, 220)
  • Proven big play ability; averaged 19.4 yards per reception as a senior
  • Creates separation in vertical routes
  • Good run blocker downfield

Purdue WR #7

What are DeAngelo Yancey’s weaknesses?

  • Just average speed; not a burner at 4.52 in the 40-yard dash.
  • Not considered a good route runner
  • Can be neutralized with quality man coverage
  • Never caught more than 50 percent of targeted throws in any single season of his college career

How does DeAngelo Yancey fit with the Packers?

Yancey will be a developmental prospect, but he checks many of the boxes the Packers look for as far as physical attributes. He’s a big target who can get downfield in the right situation, and the Packers have lacked a consistent deep threat. Playing with other receivers that draw more attention, Yancey could be that guy.
