645 - Packers Can Find Value in a Complicated Receiver Class

We finish off our NFL Draft preview with a look at the wide receivers in this year’s class that could be a fit for what the Packers are looking for. Does it align with their needs? And when should they take one?

Why the Packers should draft a wide receiver (00:31)

Despite the emergence of Christian Watson, the Packers could still use help at wide receiver. Romeo Doubs was fine enough, but even he struggled at times, and beyond Watson and Doubs, there’s very little to speak of on the Packers’ depth chart. The Packers have a clear need.

But complicating the picture is the Packers’ historical preference for a certain kind of receiver. They prefer bigger bodies at the position, usually targeting players who are at least six feet tall and 200 pounds. In a vacuum, that’s fine. In practice, that very much limits the Packers’ potential pool of receivers, and this year, in particular, that’s an especially big problem.

If the Packers are going to add talent to their receiver room, this is the year they might need to make an exception to how they’ve always done things.

2023 wide receivers that hit the Packers’ thresholds (7:17)

Nevertheless, our discussion starts with players who hit the Packers’ historical thresholds for wide receivers. Here are the players in this year’s class who match what the Packers have looked for in the past along with their position (as of recording) on the Consensus Mock Draft Big Board:

  • Quentin Johnston - TCU (19)

  • Cedric Tillman - Tennessee (66)

  • Rashee Rice - SMU (73)

  • Jonathan Mingo - Mississippi (86)

  • A.T. Perry - Wake Forest (92)

  • Michael Wilson - Stanford (114)

  • Xavier Hutchinson - Iowa State (116)

  • Dontayvion Wicks - Virginia (156)

  • Andre Iosivas - Princeton (159)

  • Bryce Ford-Wheaton - West Virginia (168)

  • Grant DuBose - Charlotte (181)

Prospects that could merit an exception to the Packers’ thresholds (27:03)

If the Packers are going to make an exception to how they’ve gone about finding receivers, here are a few guys they could consider:

  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba - Ohio State (13)

  • Jalin Hyatt - Tennessee (38)

  • Marvin Mims - Oklahoma (74)

  • Tyler Scott - Cincinnati (77)
