Brace yourself for an all-white Packers uniform
The Minnesota Vikings have revealed a new alternate uniform, trading in their traditional purple and yellow for a white and purple and “metallic gray” (silver?) getups.
The particulars of the Vikings new garb are not of interest to me, but the fact that they exist compels me to point out that an all-white Packers uniform is inevitable. Uni Watch confirmed earlier this offseason that the Packers plan to unveil a white helmet at some point, and I think it’s pretty obvious what’s going to happen from here.
If they’re adding a white helmet, they’re going to pair it with their existing all-white uniforms. It doesn’t make sense to put it with their green home uniforms or their throwbacks, and it’s a wasted opportunity to throw it on a uniform that includes yellow pants. It’s got to go with a white uniform, and the Packers already have one.
The Packers haven’t yet confirmed this will happen, but the white helmet reportedly appears in this year’s edition of Madden. That’s a fairly good bellwether, but not an ironclad guarantee. However, if the Packers are going to unveil the uniform, it’s a pretty good bet to happen in August. The last time the Packers unveiled a new uniform, it was their all-green throwbacks, which dropped on August 19, 2021. If they weren’t going to announce it around the draft, when most teams roll out their new uniforms, I’d say following their previous release schedule is a pretty good guideline.
To be sure, Uni Watch’s source above doesn’t guarantee a white helmet is coming and wasn’t sure they’d be paired with a specific uniform, but the pieces are all here and I’m happy to connect them. The NFL clearly is in favor of teams adding more alternate uniforms otherwise they wouldn’t have relaxed their nonsensical “one shell” helmet rule. The recent spate of alternate uniforms paired with alternate helmets is just a start, and if the Packers are going to jump on the bandwagon, you can bet your cheese curds and Spotted Cow they’ll do it in the most non-committal way they can.
To me, that says white helmet, white jersey, and white pants.
I won’t comment on the merits of a look along these lines until this still-as-of-yet imaginary uniform actually exists, but I’ll leave you with this: if and when the Packers unveil an all-white ensemble, we’re calling it their white cheddar uniform.
Editor’s note: an earlier version of this article speculated that the uniform would be unveiled around next year’s draft. That timeline was posited because the author is only semi-literate on a good day; the UniWatch source indicated that the throwback would be coming this year, not in 2025.
